After a failed attempt to catch my own wild yeast and create my own sourdough starter, I sent away for a free sourdough starter. I was more than excited to get it in the mail a couple of weeks thereafter (truth be told I’m excited to even get the Rainbow ad).
It sat in my kitchen for another week before I rejuvenated it with some flour, sugar and water in a Pyrex bowl (NO Metal allowed!). It showed signs of being alive shortly after that. The next day when I removed the towel covering the bowl, it was full of life!
I mixed everything in, incorporating the fermented alcohol back in and added some potato flakes for it to feed on. Then I threw it in the fridge to slow down the process somewhat.
A couple of days later, I followed the included recipe for San Francisco sourdough (scroll to the bottom) included with my starter. To really treat myself, I also went to World market and purchased a rattan basket to proof my bread in (just coat it with olive oil and spring some flour in it)
It came out beautifully, sour with a hard outter crust.
