By my first bagel and lox experience, i was hooked. Since then i have often had mad cravings for them, which is easily curable by making one at home, or going out for a weekend breakfast. This weekend, David and i chose the latter as we were sitting around my apartment reading the Sunday Times, drinking my poorly made coffee. Besides, what could go better with the paper??
We went to Common Roots, a locally owned cafe which made a name for itself by promoting the use of local and organically grown fare, making everything from scratch, and having some of the best homemade bagels on this side of the Mississippi. Because everything is made for scratch, i believe that you are getting a lot of bang for your buck. the prices are very reasonable (two, coffees, two bagels and log with extra for less than $16), not to mention the fact that you eating locally grown food, in a calm, yet urban space that caters to non-profits, and has an outdoor patio.
The bagels. Oh the bagels! They are divine and hearty on each bite. Common Roots’ extras include red onion, capers (how dare anyone not offer this sammich without them), the cream cheese, lox (obv), and a welcomed surprise tuft of alpha sprouts, which are hidden under the salmon.
Look how thick this sammich is! I couldn’t take a bite without squishy it down hard, so much so that the fresh cream cheese came came oozing out the exterior, middle, and of course, all over my hands. A small price to pay for sure, and that’s why Kimberly-Clark made paper towels.
It was delicious. It was messy. The ingredients were fresh. Moreover, it satisfied my immediate need for a hearty breakfast, that was far more fulfilling than a danish, scone, or cereal.
